The Platt Panthers waltzed into Thursday's matchup with five straight wins but they left with six. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Edwin O. Smith 42-14 at home. Platt might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team's won five games by 21 points or more this season.
It was another big night for Joel Rey, who rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown. Rey has been hot recently, having posted 100 or more rushing yards the last five times he's played. Austen Standish was another key contributor, rushing for 68 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Edwin O. Smith to a paltry 201 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Platt's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid the passer out four times before it was all said and done. In that department, Jayden Vega was the leader with two sacks.
Despite the defeat, Edwin O. Smith had strong showings from Noah Cordone, who picked up 112 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Connor Ouellette, who threw for 166 yards and a touchdown.
Platt pushed their record up to 8-1 with that win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 30.4 points per game. As for Edwin O. Smith, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Platt will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Maloney at 10:30 a.m. on November 23rd. Maloney is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last five games. Edwin O. Smith will have plenty of time to ponder what went wrong as they've got a bye scheduled next week. After, they'll take on Tolland at 6:30 p.m. on November 21st. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Connecticut (Tolland is ranked 78th, while Edwin O. Smith is ranked 91st).
