5A Region I District 3 recap Oct. 23, 2012
Connor Huffman and Don Jerry provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Houston. The connection was good for 92 yards, the longest such play in 5A Region I District 3 this season.
Martin extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating North Crowley, 47-7. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Huffman and Brandon Washington gave Arlington a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Huffman threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns, while Washington ran for 145 yards. Raymond Sheard also contributed to the rushing game with 51 yards on the ground.
Eric Rivers was the best wideout in the league this week as Bowie topped Lamar. Rivers tallied five receptions for 93 yards. Jerry helped Bowie's passing attack out by catching one ball for 44 yards.
Devon Diego made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Panthers fell to Martin. The 6-foot-4 senior racked up one sack.
The Colts' Huffman and Dontha Robinson have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 5A Region I District 3 in both passing and receiving yards. Huffman has thrown for 1341 yards this season, while Robinson, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 31 catches for 586 yards. Kyle Hicks from Bob Wager's team leads the league in rushing with 966 yards.
Hicks of the the Warriors is only 34 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Volunteers take on the Texans. As it stands, Bowie is in first, while Houston is in fifth.
Anthony Criss' team moved up to 656 from 705 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Texans climbed the ranks as a result of falling to Arlington 49-19.
