Even though the Jarrell Cougars have not done well against the Marble Falls Mustangs recently (they were 0-4 in their previous four matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Jarrell enjoyed a cozy 50-35 victory over the Mustangs. Given Jarrell's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 388th, while the Mustangs are ranked 809th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jarrell's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jasmine Benavidez, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten steals. Benavidez is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games she's played. Another player making a difference was Aniya Taylor, who scored 13 points along with two steals.
Despite the loss, Marble Falls had strong showings from Lexie Edwards, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds, and Bethany Fry, who scored eight points along with six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Leslie Reynoso, who scored five points along with seven rebounds.
Jarrell pushed their record up to 19-11 with that victory, which was their seventh straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.3 points per game. As for Marble Falls, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-21.
Jarrell will head out on the road to challenge the Vikings at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Lago Vista has now lost eight straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 28. As for Marble Falls, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Badgers at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
