MaxPreps Sac-Joaquin Section Top 25 high school football rankings

The top two teams continued to steam opponents and previous No. 3 Oak Ridge was stunned by an out-of-state foe.

League play starts this week with the Sierra Foothill League including ranked teams Folsom, Rocklin, Oak Ridge and Granite Bay, the Delta League including Elk Grove, Grant, Franklin, Jesuit and Monterey Trail and the Valley Oak League with Oakdale, Central Catholic and Sierra.

1. Folsom (last week: 1) 4-0
League: Sierra Foothill
Result: Beat Burbank (Sacramento) 61-13 as the starters were pulled early for the third consecutive game. Jake Browning tossed seven touchdowns, three to Cole Thompson, as Browning has 27 on the season, 14 to Thompson.
Next: vs. No. 7 Granite Bay, Friday.

2. Elk Grove (2) 3-0
League: Delta
Result: Beat Yuba City 7-0 as Spencer Sheff rushed for 170 yards and Tyler Vander Waal found Aidan Martinez for a 48-yard touchdown. Sai Ta'amu had two sacks.

3. Grant (Sacramento) (4) 3-0
League: Delta
Result: Idle
Next: vs. No. 11 Franklin (Elk Grove), Friday.

4. Rocklin (6) 4-0
League: Sierra Foothill
Result: Beat previous No. 9 Sacramento 47-6 as Max O'Rourke passed for five touchdowns, hitting Blake Laurin three times, and the defense came up with three interceptions and three sacks.
Next: vs. No. 5 Oak Ridge, Oct. 3.

5. Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) (3) 3-1
League: Sierra Foothill
Result: Lost to Reed (Sparks, Nev.) 26-14 after successive ranked wins against Vacaville and Burbank (Sacramento).
Next: vs. Woodcreek (Roseville), Friday.

6. Vacaville (8) 2-1
League: Monticello Empire
Result: Beat previous No. 6 Granite Bay 13-7 as Chad Hekking and Daveon Harris led long, time-consuming scoring drives in evening the nonleague series 5-5-1. Vacaville lost only at No. 5 Oak Ridge on the final play.

7. Granite Bay (5) 2-1
League: Sierra Foothill
Result: Lost to new No. 6 Vacaville 13-6 despite a strong game from LB Cameron Smith, who had two interceptions.
Next: at No. 1 Folsom, Friday.

8. Del Oro (Loomis) (7) 1-3
League: Sierra Foothill
Result: Lost to NorCal No. 1 De La Salle (Concord) 52-0 as everyone in NorCal has lost to the Spartans since 1991. Del Oro a week earlier beat state-ranked Vista Murieta 22-15.
Next: at Nevada Union (Grass Valley), Friday.

9. Jesuit (Carmichael) (11) 2-1
League: Delta
Result: Idle. Loss was to NorCal No. 1 De La Salle 63-0 in an opener.
Next: vs. Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove), Friday

10. Franklin (Elk Grove) (12) 2-1
League: Delta
Result: Idle. Loss was to NorCal-ranked Bellarmine (San Jose).

12. Vanden (Fairfield) (13) 3-0
League: Solano County
Result: Beat Center (Antelope) 34-20 as Christian Pointer turned the game by forcing a fumble and returning it 65 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the second half to ignite a 28-point barrage. LB Nick Gill also played well.

League: Valley Oak
Result: Idle

14. St. Mary's (Stockton) (10) 2-1
League: Tri-City
Result: Lost at St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 27-24 in double overtime on a field goal after missing one from 35 yards out on the final play of regulation.
Next: vs. Los Gatos, Friday.

15. Central Catholic (Modesto) (17) 2-1
League: Valley Oak
Result: Beat Beyer (Modesto) 41-13 despite losing RB Montell Bland to an ankle injury, though Kalhiel Dillard rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns. The loss was to No. 15 St. Mary's in the Holy Bowl on a late play.
Next: vs. No. 14 Manteca, Friday.

16. Merced (18) 2-2
League: Central California
Result: Beat Enochs (Modesto) 70-35 as Jamar Turner set a defensive tone with a pick-6 and a fumble recovery for a score and Jabar Byrd rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns. The losses were close to Central Section powerhouses Clovis West (Fresno) and Edison (Fresno).

17. Rio Linda (19) 4-0
League: Tri-County
Result: Beat Foothill (Sacramento) 61-13 as Marcel Brown rushed for four touchdowns, Zak Burden passed for two and James Sanchez returned a punt for a score.

18. Buhach Colony (Atwater) (20) 3-1
League: Central California
Result: Beat Pacheco (Los Banos) 24-21 as Nate Duran tossed two touchdowns and ran for one. The loss was to Central Section power Clovis North (Fresno) 36-35.

19. Monterey Trail (Elk Grove) (22) 3-0
League: Delta
Result: Idle. Biggest win was over No. 21 Inderkum.
Next: vs. Sheldon (Sacramento), Friday.

20. Sierra (Manteca) (25) 3-0
League: Valley Oak
Result: Idle. Sierra is ranked No. 1 by The Modesto Bee but was a late entry into these rankings with plenty of time to soar with RB Mark Paule Jr.

League: Tri-County
Result: Saleisan (Richmond) 45-26 as Austin Thurman ran for three touchdowns and Larry Hardy returned two interceptions for scores. The loss was 29-27 to No. 20 Monterey Trail.

22. Sacramento (9) 2-1
League: Metropolitan
Result: Lost to No. 4 Rocklin 47-6 as the wheels completely came off against a strong opponent.

League: Modesto Metro
Result: Beat Turlock 33-28 as lineman Jorge Carreno earned team Player of the Game honors, Nathan Phillips tossed two touchdowns and ran for 122 and two more.

24. Pitman (Turlock) (21) 3-0
League: Central California
Result: Beat Oakland Tech (Oakland) 35-14 to continue hot start in gearing up for a league race that will include Merced.
Next: vs. North Salinas (Salinas), Oct. 3.

25. Napa (19) 2-1
League: Monticello Empre
Result: Lost to NorCal-ranked Campolindo (Moraga) 52-27 despite two touchdown passes and two touchdown runs by QB Kiel Brown.
