Playing in a state tournament filled with upsets, Flower Mound made sure there were no close games in the Texas Class 5A finals as it handily won its final two games to move up to No. 7 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 50 National Baseball Rankings.
Flower Mound dropped Pearland 9-1 in the semfinals and then blanked Reagan (San Antonio) 10-0 in the championship game. Although Flower Mound has 11 losses on the season, it's hard not to move the Texas 5A state champion into the top 10.
Marcus (Flower Mound) also benefited from Flower Mound's championship. Marcus had a pair of wins over Flower Mound during the season, but dropped a regional playoff game to its hometown rival. Flower Mound's state championship, however, moves Marcus up into the Top 25.
The Virginia state playoffs also figure to weigh heavily on the final Xcellent 50, which will run once all state playoffs are complete. Two teams from the Virginia 6A state playoffs, Western Branch and Cosby, are close to the Top 25 at Nos. 26 and 27, respectively, while 5A combatants Stone Bridge and Freeman are ranked 15th and 22th.
