I Section II recap Oct. 30, 2012
Hamilton extended the longest winning streak in I Section II this week by beating Corona del Sol, 52-7. The win marks eighth in a row for the the Huskies.
Tucson High Magnet School took down Flowing Wells 55-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Cam Volk threw for 77 yards and ran for 43 yards in the win.
Basha's dynamic duo of Zach Werlinger and Nate Phillips proved tough for Maryvale to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Werlinger threw for 207 yards and three touchdowns and Phillips had 179 yards receiving. Cody Duran helped Basha's passing attack out by catching one ball for 28 yards.
Shay Real made the biggest impact on defense this week as Desert Ridge bested Boulder Creek. The 6-foot-0 senior grabbed one interception.
Nathaniel Rodriquez was the most productive running back in the league this week. In six carries, he ran for 152 yards as the Jaguars bested the Panthers. Teammate Tarek Morrison added to the ground attack by rushing for 79 yards.
6-foot-0 quarterback Darell Garretson of Chandler is the league leader in passing yards this season with 2655. He has also thrown 23 touchdowns. On the ground, Buena's Dominique Drake has rushed for 1621 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Phillips. The Basha star has 64 catches for 1076 yards.
The marquee game in I Section II this week will be the clash between Hamilton and Highland. Steve Belles' team enters the contest ranked third in the state, while the Hawks ranks 17th.
Basha led the league in scoring this week after putting up 58 points on Maryvale. Werlinger in the win.
