ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - the Cougars had a big 22-point second quarter on Saturday, sealing a 43-14 victory over
Windsor (Calif.).
Rancho Cotate scored on a
Malik Newton touchdown run, a touchdown pass by
Gunner Mefferd to
Joey Trono and a Mefferd touchdown pass to
Chris Taylor-yamanoha in the quarter.
After taking the lead on a
Tanoa Peleti touchdown run in the first quarter, RC was up 29-6 at the half.
The final outcome was shocking, as the Rohnert Park school was ranked No. 383 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for California, far below Windsor's spot at No. 259.
Rancho Cotate's standout player in the win was Mefferd. The sophomore quarterback threw three touchdowns.
The defeat comes as a step back for Windsor, which notched a 29-23 victory over Washington in its previous outing. The win was a nice bounce back for Rancho Cotate, which lost to American Canyon last week, 56-12.
Rancho Cotate (3-1) goes up against Ukiah in a North Bay game matchup next week, while Windsor (2-2) locks horns with Maria Carrillo also in a North Bay game.
