This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Logan Beam and Seth Robinson. Beam rushed for 184 yards and two scores while picking up 9.7 yards per carry while Robinson rushed for 160 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 15 carries. Those 184 rushing yards gave Beam a new career-high.
Elkins was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 344 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 171 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.
Elkins didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Silas Mustoe.
Meanwhile, Preston scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They fell just short of Buckhannon-Upshur by a score of 60-57. The Knights' defeat continues a trend for the squad, making it four in a row.
Elkins will have to keep a close watch on Slaton Manko and Aidan Schmidl, a pair of players who had a big impact on Preston's prior game. Manko threw for 603 yards and six TDs while completing 76.8% of his passes, while Schmidl picked up 421 receiving yards and six scores. Schmidl showed off some serious burst, lighting up the secondary with a catch for 68 yards. Easton Hayes also helped out as he racked up 138 receiving yards.
Preston's loss dropped their record down to 1-8. As for Elkins, their victory bumped their record up to 6-3.
Everything came up roses for Elkins against Preston in their previous meeting back in September of 2016, as the team secured a 38-8 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tigers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
