Basketball Recap: Heritage Takes a Loss

Heritage lost against Chaparral back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Heritage Eagles took a 67-61 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Chaparral Wolverines. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 64th, while the Wolverines are ranked third).

When it comes to explaining why Heritage lost, don't look at Trystan Rangel. Despite the final result, he went 8 for 20 en route to 20 points and six assists. The contest was Rangel's third in a row with at least 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brayden Chaney, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Heritage smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive games.

Chaparral was led to victory by Christian Williams and Luke Williams. Christian posted 14 points in addition to five assists and five steals, while Luke went 5 of 6 on his way to 13 points along with six boards and five blocks. Luke has been hot for a while, having posted two or more blocks the last nine times he's played. Champ Spears was another key player, putting up nine points.

Heritage dropped their record down to 9-10 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Chaparral, the victory was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 16-3.

Coming up, Heritage will square off against ThunderRidge at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. ThunderRidge knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past seven matches -- so hopefully Heritage likes a good challenge. As for Chaparral, they will challenge Castle View at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Chaparral is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 68.5 points per game this season.
