The Archbishop Spalding girls basketball team entered Thursday night’s game against Seton Keough with an impressive 15-3 record and 10-game winning streak on the line.
Unfortunately for the host Cavaliers, Maggie Morrison’s 14 points weren’t enough to ward off a balanced Gator scoring attack as Spalding fell, 48-41, putting an end to their impressive streak.
After trailing by four points at the half and one at the end of the third quarter, Seton Keough (15-6) used an 18-10 fourth-quarter run on its way to securing the win.
The Gators were led by Asya Bussie’s nine points. Achiri Ade, Katelyn Fischer and Amber Singletary each chipped in with eight points for the visitors.
More Girls Basketball: Notre Dame downs Dunbar
Senior center Caitlin Bopp, bound for Rider University, scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Institute of Notre Dame to a 47-37 win over Dunbar.
Jordan Bateson contributed 10 points as the Indians (3-10) won for just the third time this season.
Poets freshman Michelle Wright poured in a team-high 14 points, but it wasn’t enough as Dunbar (6-6) dropped its third consecutive game.
Notre Dame returns to IAAM A Conference play on Wednesday when it hosts the McDonogh School. Dunbar opens its Baltimore City Division I schedule on Tuesday when they travel to Lake Clifton.
Boys Basketball: Saddler scores 1,000th point
Aberdeen senior Devon Saddler, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard already committed to play for coach Monte Ross at the University of Delaware, scored his 1,000th career point during the Eagles’ 69-48 win over Bel Air on Friday night.
Saddler, who averaged 18 points his junior year to set himself up for Friday night’s feat, needed 21 points entering the game to reach the milestone. He finished the game with 29 points, slightly below his 30.2 points-per-game average this season.
"It was a shock," Saddler told the Cecil Whig. "I never thought I would score 1,000 points. From my freshman year to my sophomore year, I worked hard during the summertime to improve."
Keyon Edwards, a 2003 Aberdeen graduate, was the last Eagle to top 1,000 career points.
Boys Basketball: Mardela boys win in overtime
Mardela rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to down James M. Bennett in overtime, 72-66, on Friday night.
The Warriors’ Cody Jacoby scored a game-high 22 points while leading his team to the come-from-behind win. Trevon Sterling chipped in 19 points and Aaron Myrick added 12 to go along with his team-high 16 rebounds.
The Clippers were led by Kevin Armstrong’s 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Boys Basketball: Linganore boys end losing streak against Urbana
The record-setting bitter cold temperatures last Friday night didn’t deter the Linganore High faithful as they packed the gymnasium to see their home team down Urbana, 73-66, for its first win over their arch rival since the 2003 season.
In a game marred by fouls – the teams combined for 74 foul shots – Linganore shot 24-of-35 from the charity stripe, including sinking 9-of-13 in the final minute of the game to thwart any hopes Urbana had for a comeback.
Linganore senior Sterling Hallfors finished with a game-high 22 points. Jimmy Eckard chipped in with 16 points and Rob Havenstein scored 13.
Urbana star Kevin Sowers, despite being closely guarded by Hallfors all night, managed to score a team-high 17 points and dish out seven assists before fouling out with 52 seconds remaining.
"He's a good player," Hallfors told the Frederick News Post. "He's got quick steps, he's got good moves and he knows how to attack the basket. He was a handful, but I got a lot of help from my team sliding over."
Football: Former Mt. Hebron football star opts for NFL
Aaron Maybin, a 2006 Mt. Hebron graduate and two-year defensive lineman at Penn State University, announced last week that he was declaring himself eligible for the 2009 NFL draft.
Maybin, listed at 6-foot-4 and 236 pounds on Penn State’s football site, is considered by many to be the No. 1 defensive end in the draft with some prognosticators predicting he could go as high as the seventh pick in the first round. The draft will be held on April 25 in New York City.
At Mt. Hebron, Maybin recorded 10 sacks and 80 tackles and was named first-team all-county his senior season. He also played basketball and wrestled, winning a county championship in the heavyweight division his junior year.
Maybin reportedly still plans to complete his degree at Penn State, where he is enrolled in the College of Communications and is one of seven current Nittany Lions players who were prep standouts from Maryland high schools.
