Basketball Recap: Poinciana Comes Up Short

Poinciana has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were five points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 49-44 heartbreaker at the hands of the Haines City Hornets. The Eagles were probably out for revenge after losing 53-48 to them when the teams met back in January of 2022, then they'll just have to keep looking.

When it comes to explaining why Poinciana lost on Friday, don't look at Javonte Simpson-Lee. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds. Simpson-Lee is crushing it when it comes to boards: he's pulled down at least eight every time he's taken the court this season. Savion Viser was another key player, putting up nine points and seven rebounds.

Haines City had a senior duo take command as Dequarious Marks posted 13 points and five steals and Eddy Hyppolite Jr. had 12 points along with seven boards and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Derek Robles, who earned five points and three steals.

Poinciana's loss dropped their record down to 14-7. As for Haines City, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-10.

Poinciana will challenge Tohopekaliga at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Poinciana is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57 points per game this season. As for Haines City, they will venture away from home to take on Discovery at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Discovery knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 12 matchups -- so hopefully Haines City likes a good challenge.
