South Laurel has gone 9-1 against Whitley County recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Cardinals will be playing in front of their home fans against the Colonels at 6:00 p.m. South Laurel will be looking to extend their current nine-game winning streak.
South Laurel's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Monday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Pulaski County, sneaking past 2-0. The two-run effort marked the Cardinals' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
The result came thanks to Kenzie Williams's shutout, as she gave up just four hits and racked up six Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.
At the plate, South Laurel saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Addison Baker, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Whitley County got the win against Barbourville on Tuesday by a conclusive 15-4. Considering the Colonels have won ten contests by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Caylee Singleton made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Singleton was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one run and one double.
In other batting news, Whitley County got a massive performance out of Jayden Barton, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Those two stolen bases gave Barton a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hallie Huddleston, who went 2-for-5 with two triples, three RBI, and one run.
South Laurel's victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 19-4. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.9 runs on average over those games. As for Whitley County, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 15-18.
Thursday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. South Laurel hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .353. However, it's not like Whitley County struggles in that department as they've averaged .332. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
South Laurel took their win against Whitley County when the teams last played last Monday by a conclusive 11-0 score. Do the Cardinals have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Colonels turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
