The Poth Pirates will venture away from home to face off against the La Vernia Bears at 1:00 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Things were looking good for Poth after they put the first points on the board on Tuesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Cuero by a score of 12-11. The Pirates haven't had much luck with the Gobblers recently, as the team has come up short the last seven times they've met.
Bella Serna and Karlee Kroll did some serious damage despite the final result: Serna went 4-for-5 with five RBI, two runs, and two doubles, while Kroll went 3-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two doubles. Those doubles marked the first that Kroll hit this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ava Kroll, who scored three runs while going 4-for-5.
They weren't the only ones working in the hit department: Poth kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 21 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 2 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 10.8.
Meanwhile, La Vernia had already won four in a row and they went ahead and made it five on Wednesday. Everything went their way against the Bulldogs as they made off with a 13-0 win. The result was nothing new for the Bears, who have now won six matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
The result came thanks to Lucy Schlachter's shutout, as she gave up just four hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, La Vernia let Emily Duncan and Makenzie Soriano run wild. Duncan scored two runs while going 3-for-4, while Soriano went 2-for-5 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run. That's the most doubles Soriano has posted since back in February of 2024. Madison Duncan was another key player, scoring four runs while going 2-for-4.
Poth's loss dropped their record down to 5-5. As for La Vernia, their victory bumped their record up to 10-3.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Monday. Poth hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.5 home runs per game. However, it's not like La Vernia struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Poth was able to grind out a solid win over La Vernia when the teams last played back in March of 2024, winning 10-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for Poth since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
