The Belmont Sentinels struggled with assists on Wednesday (the Downtown Magnets Suns had 1400% more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Belmont was dealt a 69-35 defeat at the hands of Downtown Magnets. While losing is never fun, Belmont can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 763rd, while Downtown Magnets is ranked 200th).
Defeat or not, Belmont got some senior leadership from Semaj Norwood who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 10 rebounds and Jordan Martin who scored 9 points along with 5 steals. Martin scored a full 25.7% of Belmont's points, the second time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Downtown Magnets was led to victory by Brayane Kuaka Luyeye and Justin Huang. Kuaka Luyeye dropped a double-double on 15 points and 15 rebounds, while Huang scored 20 points along with 6 assists and 5 steals. That makes it two consecutive games in which Huang has scored at least 25% of Downtown Magnets' points. Jason Martinez was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with 6 assists and 3 steals.
This is the second loss in a row for Belmont and nudges their season record down to 1-4. As for Downtown Magnets, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 3-0.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Belmont will challenge Roybal at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Downtown Magnets is on the road again on Monday and play against Math & Science College Preparatory at 6:00 p.m. on December 4th.
