East Bay recap November 5, 2013
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Granada, who took down 192nd ranked Amador Valley, 42-21.
Blake Bierwith of California ran for the longest rushing play in East Bay this season against Livermore last week. Bierwith's team bested the Cowboys as he sprinted for 78 yards on the play and finished with 182 in all.
Bierwith was a passing and rushing force as California topped Livermore. Bierwith's key target this week was CJ Cornwell, who caught 3 passes for 36 yards.
Bierwith was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 182 yards on 16 carries as Eric Billeci's team lost to Eric Billeci's team. Teammate Cameron Owen added to the ground attack by rushing for 10 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Monte Vista's Nikita Zamora and Marco Zamora have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-2 quarterback Zamora has thrown for 1,601 yards this season, while Zamora has 45 catches for 581 yards. The Grizzlies' Bierwith leads the league in rushing yards with 1,339.
Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when the Mustangs' Zamora goes up against San Ramon Valley's Carter Nichols.
Next week's game between Monte Vista and the Wolves will feature a good passing match up as Zamora will test his arm against Nichols' defensive ability.
An important game coming up in East Bay this week will be when Foothill takes on the Dons. The Falcons are in second place, while Amador Valley is in fifth place.
The Matadors moved up to 184 from 232 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Granada climbed the ranks as a result of beating Rick Sira's team 42-21.
