Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2024 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Malik Bell of
Sussex Central (Georgetown) is the 2024 MaxPreps Delaware High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot, 200-pound senior running back led the Golden Knights to a 9-3 record and Class 3A semifinal appearance.
Bell led the state in rushing with 2,174 yards and rushing touchdowns with 27. He averaged 180.3 yards per game and nine yards per carry.
In addition to his exploits in the running game, Bell had five receptions for 156 yards and three TDs while adding an 84-yard kickoff return touchdown.
In a 31-28 win over Appoquinimink (West Middletown) in the first round of the playoffs, Bell ran 32 times for a season-high 243 yards and two scores. He also had a 200-yard game against eventual state champion Middletown during the regular season.
