Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up 13 more assists than your opponent, a fact the Lone Star Longhorns proved on Thursday. They put the hurt on Deer Trail with a sharp 49-29 victory. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 28-7.
Lone Star got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jade Kuntz out in front who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Kuntz has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Aleighcea Kuntz, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and six steals.
Despite the loss, Deer Trail had strong showings from Ally Hardwick, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Megan Donovan, who scored ten points along with eight rebounds and seven blocks. Hardwick is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Taylor Reis, who scored two points along with two steals.
Lone Star's win bumped their record up to 7-8. As for Deer Trail, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-11.
Lone Star will look to defend their home court on Saturday against Flagler at 4:00 p.m. Hopefully Lone Star focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Thursday. As for Deer Trail, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Genoa-Hugo/Karval at 4:00 p.m. on February 9th.
