5A Region 1 recap September 4, 2013
Clarksdale was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fourth in 5A Region 1. Earlier in the week, the Wildcats triumphed over Greenville-Weston 26-24.
Saltillo moved up to 41 from 68 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Tigers climbed the ranks as a result of besting Pontotoc 41-0.
Danterius Ellington put up the best numbers in passing as Center Hill fell to Tupelo. He had a total of 15 completions for 86 yards. Ellington's favorite target this week was Jonathan Weeks, who caught 3 passes for 40 yards.
Aeris Williams was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 32 carries, he ran for 194 yards as West Point beat the Warriors.
Williams provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Green Wave lost to South Panola. Williams' key target this week was Williams, who caught 5 passes for 34 yards.
Randolph was the best receiver in 5A Region 1 this week as Pat Byrd's team topped Pontotoc. Randolph racked up 4 receptions for 51 yards.
Elliot Blue made the biggest impact on defense this week as Clarksdale bested the Hornets. He.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Lake Cormorant's Bailey Walker and Ryan Golden have proven to be a lethal combination. Walker has thrown for 240 yards this season, while Golden, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 6 catches for 161 yards. The Tigers' Diamante Pounds leads the league in rushing yards with 409.
Saltillo took down Scott Brown's team 41-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Pounds ran for 179 yards in the win.
