Nick Mathews of
Patriot (Nokesville, Va.) caught 10 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown in a 48-21 playoff win over Yorktown on Friday to break the Virginia state record for receptions in a season.
Mathews has 99 receptions on the year, which breaks the previous mark of 97 set by Brad Wooten of Eastern Montgomery in 14 games in 2010. Mathews has played in 11 games and will play again this week against Westfield (Chantilly, Va.) in the second round of the playoffs.
Mathews is also close to the single season records for receiving yardage and touchdowns. With 1,548 yards on the season, Mathews needs 323 to tie the record of Michael Partlow of Handley, who had 1,871 yards in 1994 in 14 games.
Mathews also has 23 touchdowns receptions on the year. The state record is 25 by Partlow.
