Southaven (Miss.) captured the lead in the fourth quarter and held on for a 21-14 victory over
DeSoto Central (Southaven, Miss.) on Saturday. The Chargers captured the lead for good when
Shea Chism thew a touchdown to
Jacquez McMillian.
After trailing 14-6 at the half, the Jaguars went ahead on a two-point conversion with 8:00 remaining in the third. Southaven grabbed hold of the lead when Chism thew a touchdown to McMillian with 7:00 to go in the fourth quarter, and never relinquished it.
Bunch played well for DeSoto Central. He ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to two on the year.
Chism was the top performer for SHS. He threw three touchdowns.
DC's lone touchdown came on an 18-yard run by Bunch in the third quarter.
The Chargers came in allowing an average of 19.1 points per game this season. The defense really stepped up, holding the Jaguars below their season average of 21.0 points scored per game.
When the two teams played each other last season, SHS came away with a 50-22 victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for DeSoto Central, which notched a 39-34 victory over Tupelo in its previous outing. The victory was a step in the right direction for the Chargers, which was coming off a 35-33 defeat at the hands of South Panola in its previous game.
In a 6A Region 1 game next week Southaven (7-3) takes on Horn Lake, and DeSoto Central (6-4) will go up against South Panola also in a 6A Region 1 game.
