The First Baptist Academy Lions won the last time they faced the Lely Trojans, and things went their way on Thursday too. First Baptist Academy narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Lely 54-52. Given First Baptist Academy's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 98th, while Lely is ranked 368th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Lely's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Richard Obas, who scored 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Lovence Valcin, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 assists.
First Baptist Academy has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 19-4 record this season. As for Lely, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-13.
First Baptist Academy won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Mariner at 7:30 p.m. on February 2nd. Mariner is coming into the contest with nine straight wins at home, meaning First Baptist Academy will have to defend against a team hungry for a win. As for Lely, they will take on Bonita Springs at TBD on Tuesday. Hopefully Lely focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Thursday.
