Softball Recap: Pioneer Has No Trouble Against Frontier

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Elkhart, Pioneer was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They put the hurt on the Frontier Falcons with a sharp 14-1 win. The Panthers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matches by 11 runs or more this season.

Lois Layer made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over five innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Averi Layer, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted over her last ten contests. Lucy Angle also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Pioneer always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .533. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Pioneer pushed their record up to 6-7 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Frontier, they are on a 29-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-10.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Pioneer will head out to take on North Judson-San Pierre at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Frontier, they will venture away from home to square off against Seeger at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Patriots have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.27 runs per game on average), something the Falcons will no doubt try to take advantage of.
