Even though the Smoky Mountain Mustangs have not done well against the Erwin Warriors recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. Smoky Mountain secured a 71-67 W over Erwin. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Smoky Mountain got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Custer Prenger out in front who scored 18 points along with five rebounds and four steals. Those four steals set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Cameron Fowler, who scored nine points along with eight assists and eight steals.
When it comes to explaining why Erwin lost, one person who can't be blamed is Carson Wallace. Despite the final result, he went 6 for 11 from beyond the arc en route to 36 points and 1 assists. Wallace scored a full 53.7% of Erwin's points, the 13th time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was CJ Walker, who scored seven points along with 15 rebounds and seven blocks.
Smoky Mountain's win bumped their record up to 4-11. As for Erwin, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-8.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Smoky Mountain will face off against Franklin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Franklin knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past five matchups -- so hopefully Smoky Mountain likes a good challenge. As for Erwin, they will head out on the road to face off against A.C. Reynolds at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. A.C. Reynolds has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games.
