The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in New Mexico (Thoreau is ranked 84th, while the Skyhawks are ranked 91st).
On Saturday, Thoreau ended up a good deal behind the Eagles and lost 49-31. Thoreau was down 39-19 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.
Meanwhile, it's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 66-36, which was the final score in Newcomb's tilt against the Eagles on Friday. Newcomb was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 37-14.
Despite the defeat, Newcomb saw an underclassman step up: Makya Nelson scored nine points along with two steals.
Thoreau now has a losing record at 9-10. As for Newcomb, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-11 record this season.
Everything came up roses for Thoreau against the Skyhawks in their previous matchup back in January as the squad secured a 64-37 victory. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Newcomb's Lethia Yazzie, who scored 21 points along with six steals.
