The Effingham Flaming Hearts will head out on the road to face off against the Mt. Zion Braves at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Even though Centralia scored an imposing 34 points on Friday, Effingham still came out on top. Effingham blew past Centralia 61-34 on the road. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 41-20.
It was another big night for Weldon Dunston, who rushed for 300 yards and six touchdowns while picking up 7.7 yards per carry. Another player making a difference was Gaige Gillum, who threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns while completing 71.4% of his passes.
Meanwhile, Mt. Zion was fully in charge on Friday, breezing past Mater Dei 41-6 at home. The contest was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Mt. Zion had established a 28 point advantage.
Makobi Adams was his usual excellent self, throwing for 302 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown. Brayden Trimble also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
Effingham now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Mt. Zion, their victory bumped their record up to 7-2.
Effingham was able to grind out a solid victory over Mt. Zion in their previous matchup two weeks ago, winning 21-14. The rematch might be a little tougher for Effingham since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
