Volcano Vista is 9-1 against Atrisco Heritage Academy since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. Volcano Vista is coming home in high spirits after they had to open their season on the road against West Mesa. Volcano Vista never let West Mesa get on the board and left with a 12-0 victory on Thursday. The Hawks haven't had any issues with the Mustangs recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive win against them.
Thayer Nitz looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.
On the hitting side, Volcano Vista let Andres Holguin and Josiah Gutierrez run wild. Holguin went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Gutierrez scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Micah Solomon, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-4.
Volcano Vista kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West Mesa onlymanaged four hits.
Meanwhile, Atrisco Heritage Academy beat Manzano 17-12 on Saturday.
Carlos Armijo made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was even better at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with four RBI, two runs, and one double.
In other batting news, Samuel Gonzalez and Ignacio Quintana did most of the damage at the plate: Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Quintana scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-5. The dominant performance also gave Quintana a new career-high in hits (two). Another player making a difference was Fabian Escobedo, who scored two runs while going 2-for-6.
Everything went Volcano Vista's way against Atrisco Heritage Academy when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Volcano Vista made off with a 14-4 victory.
