Baseball Recap: Hope Christian Extends Winning Streak to Five

Hope Christian put another one in the bag on Saturday to keep their perfect season alive. They were the clear victor by an 18-6 margin over the Sandia Prep Sundevils. That looming 18-6 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Huskies yet this season.

Caleb Pena made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Pena was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in runs.

In other pitching news, Jacob Gergen looked comfortable as he struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April of 2024.

Back at the plate, Hope Christian let Nolan Garcia and Trey Baillio run wild. Garcia went 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple, while Baillio went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. Those three runs gave Garcia a new career-high. Avery Dearholt was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing Two bases. while going 2-for-3.

Hope Christian was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .471. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .312 or higher in three consecutive matchups.

Hope Christian's win bumped their record up to 5-0. As for Sandia Prep, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hope Christian will head out to face off against Moriarty at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hope Christian's pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so Moriarty's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Sandia Prep, they will face off against Del Norte at 10:00 a.m. on March 15th.
