Basketball Game Preview: Wekiva Mustangs vs. East River Falcons

The Wekiva Mustangs will head out to square off against the East River Falcons at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Wekiva has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.

Wekiva will head into Tuesday's matchup hoping to keep the good times rolling: they had to skate by with only a two-point margin when they last took the court, which might have inspired the 42-point drubbing they dealt Evans on Tuesday. Wekiva breezed by Evans to the tune of 59-17. The contest was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Mustangs had established a 39 point advantage.

Wekiva got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Senaia Asanya out in front who went 7 of 8 on her way to 14 points. That's the most points Asanya has posted since back in November of 2024. Another player making a difference was Makayla Bell, who posted 11 points and three steals.

Meanwhile, East River entered their tilt with Lake Nona on Friday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They walked away with a 42-29 win over the Lions. Given the Falcons' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 136th, while the Lions are ranked 452nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

East River has also been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten games, which provided a massive bump to their 14-7 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.5 points per game. As for Wekiva, their victory bumped their record up to 8-15.

Wekiva was able to grind out a solid win over East River when the teams last played back in February of 2022, winning 51-38. Will Wekiva repeat their success, or does East River have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
