Downingtown West is 7-2 against Unionville since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Whippets are taking a road trip to challenge the Longhorns at 4:00 p.m. Unionville took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Downingtown West, who comes in off a win.
Downingtown West came out on top against Downingtown East on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive seven-run second inning. The Whippets walked away with a 13-10 victory over the Cougars.
Stephen Furia made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched four innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his five plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brett Connolly, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. He is becoming a predictor of Downingtown West's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 3-10 when he doesn't). Caleb Laverty also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Downingtown West always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .537. The last time their OBP was this high was was before the start of last season.
Meanwhile, Unionville didn't have quite enough to beat Sun Valley on Thursday and fell 7-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Longhorns have suffered against the Vanguards since April 25, 2022.
Unionville also got a good showing from Andrew Palahunik, who tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
On the hitting side, Indy Riggs and Jake Wilson stepped up to the plate in a big way. Riggs got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Wilson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double.
Downingtown West's win ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-11. As for Unionville, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season.
