The Overton Wolverines are taking a road trip to square off against the Memphis Central Warriors at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Overton has given up an average of 8.5 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Overton came into their game on Thursday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They lost 16-6 to Southwind.
Antwan Hooker made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Sammy Kehrli, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double.
Meanwhile, Memphis Central made easy work of Southwind on Saturday and carried off a 12-1 win. The result was nothing new for the Warriors, who have now won 12 matchups by seven runs or more so far this season.
Joshua Thurmon spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on two hits and racked up 16 Ks. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Orlando Jones and Beiker Leon did most of the damage at the plate: Jones went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI, while Leon got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Those two hits gave Jones a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Patrick Ryan, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Memphis Central has been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 13 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Overton, their defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-5-1.
Overton might still be hurting after the 13-5 loss they got from Memphis Central in their previous matchup last Friday. Can the Wolverines avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
