The Calvary Christian Warriors will face off against the Northside Christian Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.
Calvary Christian will roll into the contest after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up six points last Friday, then bounced right back against Berkeley Prep on Friday. The Warriors really took it to the Buccaneers for the full four quarters, racking up a 42-15 victory. Considering the Warriors' offense had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Calvary Christian had a senior duo take command as Lane Roberts rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns on only 12 carries and Oni Abasial rushed for 79 yards and one TD on only nine carries.
Calvary Christian didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Berkeley Prep to a completion percentage of just 50%. The Warriors have been improving in that area: they had allowed a completion percentage of 0.6 earlier this season, but they've only allowed one of 0.6 in their last three games.
Meanwhile, Northside Christian strolled into their game last Friday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They claimed a resounding 46-7 win over Evangelical Christian. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four games by 22 points or more this season.
Northside Christian's win came from a few key players Calvary Christian will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Jayce Jones, who picked up 109 receiving yards and a pair of scores, and also threw for 92 yards and one TD. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 101.2 receiving yards per game. Jack Griffin was another key player, throwing for 286 yards and three touchdowns while completing 76% of his passes.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Northside Christian's defense and their eight sacks. Evangelical Christian's QB won't forget Jacquey Ferguson Jr anytime soon given he sacked him seven times. Ferguson Jr also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with 11.
Northside Christian's victory bumped their record up to 5-0. As for Calvary Christian, the win got them back to even at 3-3.
The upcoming matchup will be a clash of competing strengths. Calvary Christian has deployed a run-first offense that has averaged 180.5 rushing yards a game. Meanwhile, Northside Christian has preferred to attack from the air: they average 290.8 passing yards per game. So which strategy will prevail on Friday? There's only one way to find out.
Everything came up roses for Calvary Christian against Northside Christian when the teams last played back in September of 2017, as the team secured a 28-0 victory. Will the Warriors repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
