Video: NFL Draft No. 1 overall picks since 1991Cam Newton, Manning brothers and Andrew Luck among top picks over last 25 years. When it comes to high school football, California, Georgia, Florida and Texas are generally considered the "Big Four" power states. So it's no surprise that California leads the way among states producing the most NFL Draft No. 1 picks since 1991 with four.
Georgia and Texas high schools have produced three – quarterbacks Cam Newton, Matthew Stafford and Andrew Luck – over the same span.
How about Florida? Shocker, Sunshine State high schools have produced
zero No. 1 picks and only Jameis Winston (2015, Florida State) and Russell Maryland (1991, Miami) attended college there.
Here's a handful of other observations as it relates to the high schools of the last 25 No. 1 picks in the NFL Draft:
* California experienced an unbelievable run of top picks at the quarterback position from 2002-2005. David Carr (2002), Carson Palmer (2003) and Alex Smith (2005) have combined for 78,832 career passing yards and 466 touchdowns.
* Thanks to Peyton and Eli Manning,
Newman (New Orleans) is the only school to produce multiple No. 1 overall picks over the past 25 years.
* In addition to Carr and Palmer from California in 2002 and 2003, two other states have gone back-to-back in terms of producing the top pick in consecutive years. Steve Emtman and Drew Bledsoe helped unlikely Washington get it done in 1992 and 1993 while Dan Wilkinson and Ki-Jana Carter of Ohio went first in 1994 and 1995. The Buckeye State actually notched three No. 1 picks in four years with Orlando Pace coming off the board to open the 1997 draft.
* Michigan has produced two top picks since 1991 and both were offensive linemen – Jake Long in 2008 and Eric Fisher in 2013.
* On the other side of the ball, both of South Carolina's top picks have come on the defensive line with Courtney Brown in 2000 and Jadeveon Clowney in 2014.
