It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Everglades City had no problem doing just that on Monday. They walked away with a 70-58 victory over the Rays. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Despite the loss, Marco Island Academy had strong showings from Mathis Fontes, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 15 rebounds, and Grayson Jones, who scored 26 points along with seven rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Fontes has scored all season. Veleon Nazarko was another key contributor, scoring two points along with 15 rebounds and three blocks.
Everglades City now has a winning record of 7-6. As for Marco Island Academy, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-14.
Everglades City won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Donahue Catholic at 6:00 p.m. on January 30th. Hopefully Donahue Catholic focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 last Friday. Marco Island Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
