Nolan Hershberger was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. He is becoming a predictor of Mt. Vernon's success: when he allows at most two earned runs the team is 2-1 (and 7-10 when he doesn't). Hershberger was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2025.
In other batting news, Gavin Gorsuch was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and one triple. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Dammon Wolfe, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Mt. Vernon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in five consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, New Albany unfortunately witnessed the end of their six-game winning streak on Monday. They fell just short of Westerville Central by a score of 4-3. Surprisingly, this marked the fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor in this series.
Aidan Wyche was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out six batters over 6.2 innings while giving up four earned runs off seven hits (and only one walk).
At the plate, Connor Bahr made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one run and one double. Jate Hoovler was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Mt. Vernon's record now sits at 9-11. As for New Albany, their defeat dropped their record down to 18-6.
Wednesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Mt. Vernon has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .432. However, it's not like New Albany struggles in that department as they've averaged .436. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mt. Vernon might still be hurting after the 11-5 loss they got from New Albany when the teams last played back in April of 2019. Can the Yellowjackets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
