The West Greene Pioneers will challenge the Carmichaels Mighty Mikes at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as West Greene comes in on three and Carmichaels on 15.
West Greene is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. They beat South Side by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 7-6.
Payton Gilbert spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six earned runs on seven hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Emmaline Beazell, who went 1-for-2 with four RBI and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendra Tharp, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, while Carmichaels put up some runs on Monday, the same can't be said for Serra Catholic. The Mighty Mikes were the clear victors by a 9-0 margin over the Eagles. The result was nothing new for the Mighty Mikes, who have now won ten contests by eight runs or more so far this season.
The result came thanks to Bailey Barnyak's shutout, as she gave up just three hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Kaitlyn Waggett was excellent, going 1-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last six games she's played. Carys McConnell was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
Carmichaels pushed their record up to 15-0 with the victory, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. As for West Greene, their record is now 16-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. West Greene has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Carmichaels struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
West Greene couldn't quite get it done against Carmichaels when the teams last played two weeks ago as they fell 6-1. Can the Pioneers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
