The Thornton Academy Trojans will face off against the South Portland Red Riots at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Thornton Academy has given up an average of 10 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Thornton Academy came up short against Windham on Friday, falling 12-1. The Trojans haven't had much luck with the Eagles recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.
Thornton Academy saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tess Frager, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for South Portland, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Wednesday. They never let Massabesic get on the board and left with a 10-0 win on Thursday. Considering the Red Riots have won three matches by more than nine runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Maegan Berry made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs and one double. Those four hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Rachel DiMauro was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Sadie Soucy, who went 2-for-4 with five RBI, one run, and one double.
South Portland always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .567. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
South Portland has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 3-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Thornton Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-5.
Thornton Academy suffered a grim 13-4 defeat to South Portland in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Trojans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
