South Salem faced Sheldon in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Saxons sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with  a  2-1  victory over the Irish. The  win was familiar territory for the Saxons, who have now won five  contests in a row.
 Briella Mathis paced South Salem's offense, picking up 20 kills. Mathis got some help from  Kamree Orizotti and her 31 assists.
South Salem's victory bumped their record up to 26-7-1. As for Sheldon, they moved to 20-4 with that  loss, which also ended their 16-match winning streak.
 Both  squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming  matchups. South Salem will challenge West Salem at 6:30  p.m.  on Tuesday. As for Sheldon, they will venture away from home to  take on Roseburg  at 6:45  p.m.  on Tuesday.
