MERIDIAN, Miss. -
Petal (Miss.) had its advantage, which at one point stood at 9 points, drop to two before the final whistle blew on a 23-21 victory over
Meridian (Miss.).
The Wildcats pulled ahead on a
Austin Holt touchdown run, and subsequently went into halftime leading 14-10. The Panthers took the lead for good with a rushing touchdown in the third quarter.
Meridian's
J-mar Smith played well. The sophomore quarterback threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown. A member of the Class of 2015 Top 100 Watch List, Smith has now scored 16 touchdowns on the season.
Petal got revenge for last year's 14-6 loss to MHS with the victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for Meridian, which notched a 38-35 victory over Brandon in its previous outing.
Meridian (6-3) will play a 6A Region 3 game against Terry next week, while Petal (8-1) will take on Forest Hill also in a 6A Region 3 game.
