While Memphis Central's win against Kirby wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Memphis Central narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Kirby 8-6.
Beiker Leon was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). That one hit allowed gave him a new career-low. He was even better at the plate, firing off two home runs and five RBI while going 2-for-4. Those two home runs gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Joshua Thurmon was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one triple.
Meanwhile, after only one run in their last game, Whitehaven made sure to put some runs up on the board against Kingsbury on Tuesday. Whitehaven was the clear victor by a 14-4 margin over Kingsbury. The Tigers' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Like Memphis Central, Whitehaven also got a great game from a two-way player: Jaylon Dodson. He struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Dodson was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing four bases while going 2-for-3. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 1.4 stolen bases per game.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Andrew Robinson, who scored three runs and stole five bases while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Dedrick Marshall, who went 1-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
Whitehaven was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in three consecutive matches.
Memphis Central pushed their record up to 10-3 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Whitehaven, the win got them back to even at 2-2-1.
Monday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Memphis Central has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .541. However, it's not like Whitehaven struggles in that department as they've averaged .591. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
