Even though the Spencer Greenwave have not done well against the Harris County Tigers recently (they were 0-3 in their previous three matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. Spencer rang in the new year with a 65-58 win over Harris County. Given Spencer's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 127th, while Harris County is ranked 468th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Key?shaun Sampton, who scored 27 points along with four steals. Those 27 points set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Mor-Le'Draeyon Duncan, who scored 11 points along with six rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Harris County lost, one person who can't be blamed is Cameron Phillips. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 18 points and 18 rebounds. Phillips scored a full 31% of Harris County's points, the ninth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Malachi Alexander, who scored ten points.
Spencer's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-1. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 76.2 points per game. As for Harris County, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost six of their last seven matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-10 record this season.
Spencer will challenge Northeast at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Northeast is coming into the matchup on a six-game losing streak. As for Harris County, they will be playing at home against McIntosh at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
