Softball Recap: Speedway Comes Up Short

Speedway extended their losing streak to five on Wednesday, dropping them down to 3-8. They took a 7-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Triton Central Tigers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Tigers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 14-4 on Tuesday.

Katie Taylor spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and three unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Taylor Fitch was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two runs. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season.

As for Triton Central, they pushed their record up to 6-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games.

On Triton Central's side, Riley Sheler looked comfortable as she tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Ashlyn Hittle, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Jalynn Keith, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and two doubles.

Looking ahead, Speedway will square off against Terre Haute North Vigo at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Triton Central, they will venture away from home to square off against Irvington Preparatory Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Irvington Preparatory Academy has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 15.71 runs per game on average), something Triton Central will no doubt try to take advantage of.
