The Westminster Academy Lions will venture away from home to square off against the Flanagan Falcons at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Westminster Academy has four straight wins, Flanagan has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Last Friday, Westminster Academy made easy work of Palm Beach Gardens and carried off an 8-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Lions, who have now won four matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
The team relied heavily on Jesus Garcia, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Calvin Martin, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Westminster Academy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Flanagan started off well but failed to capitalize on an early lead against Coral Springs Charter. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 3-2 on Thursday. That's two games in a row now that the Falcons have lost by just one run.
Miguel Colmenares was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run.
Westminster Academy's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-1. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 9 runs. As for Flanagan, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-6.
Westminster Academy's speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's game. Westminster Academy has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.5 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Flanagan, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Westminster Academy continue to outrun the ball?
Westminster Academy came up short against Flanagan in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, falling 6-2. Can Westminster Academy avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
