4A Region I District 2 recap October 22, 2013
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Eastlake, who took down 374th ranked Del Valle, 17-14. DAVID ARMENDARIZ threw for 98 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 57 yards in the win.
The Falcons scaled the state rankings by moving to 421 from 474 this week, the biggest jump in 4A Region I District 2. Eastlake climbed the ranks as a result of besting the Conquistadores 17-14.
RAMON RENTERIA was a force in the backfield as Parkland bested Riverside.
Javier Gomez was a passing and rushing force as Canutillo bested Hanks. He completed 8 passes for 136 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for 190 yards. Gomez's favorite target this week was Rogelio Esparza, who caught 4 passes for 79 yards.
Joseph Fresquez threw for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Fresquez put up the best numbers through the air as Horizon beat San Elizario. Fresquez's favorite target this week was Erik Camacho, who caught 3 passes for 122 yards.
6-foot-5 quarterback Steven Montez of Del Valle is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1,568. He has also thrown 25 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Camacho. The Horizon star has 33 catches for 791 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Eastlake takes on second place Canutillo. Last week, Jay Calderon's team topped Jesse Perales' team, while the Eagles defeated the Knights.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, the Falcons beat the Conquistadores 17-14. This was the team's fifth consecutive win.
