I Section V recap October 29, 2013
Mountain Ridge was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from sixth to fourth in I Section V. The Mountain Lions vanquished O'Connor 13-12 earlier in the week.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Pinnacle beat Horizon 49-39. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Pioneers.
Pinnacle's dynamic duo of Brian Lewerke and Daniel Galindo proved to be unstoppable against the Huskies, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Lewerke threw for 382 yards and 5 touchdowns and Galindo had 144 yards receiving. Mason Hatton helped Pinnacle's passing attack out by catching 6 balls for 124 yards.
Isaiah Birkel was a key player and the best on defense this week as Boulder Creek defeated North Canyon. The 6-foot-0 senior forced 1 fumble.
He was 18-32 with 2 interceptions.
Horizon's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Huskies feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Dalton Sneed has thrown for 3,036 yards and 35 touchdowns this season, while Jason McLaurin has 44 catches for 782 yards.
Dana Zupke's team's Lewerke is within 7 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against the Jaguars. So far this year, Lewerke has thrown for 1,993 yards with 23 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.
Josh Hoekstra of the the Pioneers is only 65 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Hoekstra has rushed for 935 yards on 143 carries so far this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Pinnacle takes on Dan Friedman's team. The Pioneers are in first place, while the Jaguars are in third place.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Pinnacle takes on Boulder Creek. The Pioneers have allowed 182 points this season, while the Jaguars have given up 200. Pinnacle allowed 39 points last week as it bested Horizon.
Mountain Ridge and the Eagles played the closest game in I Section V this week, with Mountain Ridge eventually emerging with a 13-12 victory. Zach Miller ran for 105 yards in the win.
