The Scales Mound Hornets waltzed into their game on Wednesday with two straight wins but they left with three. They secured a 66-60 W over River Ridge. Given Scales Mound's advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 195th, while River Ridge is ranked 400th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Scales Mound to victory, but perhaps none more so than Evan Cogan, who scored 14 points along with six assists and two steals. Cogan is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played. Thomas Hereau was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with seven rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why River Ridge lost, one person who can't be blamed is Joe Winter. Despite the final result, he scored 26 points along with nine rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Winter has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Seth Nicholas, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 14 rebounds.
Scales Mound is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season. As for River Ridge, their loss dropped their record down to 12-8.
Scales Mound will be playing at home against Durand at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Durand focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 30 last Monday. As for River Ridge, they will head out on the road to take on Galena at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Galena has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 284 points over their last four matchups.
