The Athens Drive Jaguars's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their third straight loss. They lost to Wakefield at home by a decisive 50-32 margin. While losing is never fun, Athens Drive can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 301st, while Wakefield is ranked 96th).
Despite the loss, Athens Drive still got an impressive performance from Kianna Gulley, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 14 rebounds. Gulley scored a full 40.6% of Athens Drive's points, the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Makenzie Kelly, who scored six points along with four steals.
Wakefield's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Lyla Bagwell, who scored eight points. Another player making a difference was Zoe Ritter, who scored seven points.
Athens Drive has been struggling recently, as they've lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-9 record this season. As for Wakefield, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 10-3.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens Drive will take on Sanderson at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Sanderson is coming into the game on a three-game losing streak. As for Wakefield, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Rolesville at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Rolesville focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up seven last Friday.
