5A Region 2 recap November 5, 2013
Russell added to the longest winning streak in 5A Region 2 this week by beating Homewood, 28-7. The win marks ninth in a row for the the Wildcats.
Russell was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after besting the Patriots. Danny Horn's team came in at 23 in the state poll after placing at number 37 last week.
Labrenikin Johnson was a passing and rushing force as the Wildcats defeated Homewood. Johnson's key target this week was Rod Hunter, who caught 3 passes for 36 yards.
Zach Miles threw for 14 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Hunter was the best receiver in the league this week as Russell beat Doug Goodwin's team. Hunter tallied 3 receptions for 36 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, the Wildcats' Bryant Horn and Lajarret Ford have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-0 quarterback Horn has thrown for 1,499 yards this season, while Ford has 33 catches for 472 yards. Valley's D.J. Bailey leads the league in rushing yards with 1,196.
Johnson of the Russell is only 89 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 143 carries Johnson has put up 911 yards this year.
Rehobeth scaled the state rankings by moving to 264 from 297 this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region 2. The Rebels climbed the ranks as a result of beating Cottonwood 23-14.
