Wells is 8-2 against Mineral County since May of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Leopards will challenge the Serpents at 11:00 a.m. Wells is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 12.1 runs per game this season.
On Friday, Wells didn't have quite enough to beat Smith Valley and fell 7-5. The loss continues a trend for the Leopards in their meetings with the Bulldogs: they've now lost four in a row.
Cesar Beruman was huge no matter where he played even without the win. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up four earned runs off three hits. Beruman was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Beruman wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Charley Peterson, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI. Another was Miguel Martinez, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Mineral County waltzed into their game on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came out on top against the Warriors by a score of 16-13.
Like Wells, Mineral County also got a great game from a two-way player: Johnny Serrato. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Those seven strikeouts gave Serrato a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. He has become a key player for Mineral County: the team is 11-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-8 otherwise.
In other batting news, Sean Ethridge was a standout: he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with five stolen bases and three runs. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Blackwood, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Mineral County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in three consecutive matches.
Mineral County pushed their record up to 15-9 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.7 runs over those games. As for Wells, their defeat dropped their record down to 24-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Wells has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mineral County struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Wells beat Mineral County 8-3 in their previous matchup back in March. Will the Leopards repeat their success, or do the Serpents have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
