The Peach County Trojans will head out on the road to face off against the Pike County Pirates at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Peach County ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They managed a 68-62 victory over Upson-Lee. Given Peach County's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 136th, while the Knights are ranked 301st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Peach County's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Marissa Melendez, who scored 15 points along with five rebounds. It was the first time this season that Melendez scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Uzzhia (uzi) rumph, who scored 12 points along with six assists and six rebounds.
Meanwhile, Pike County had to endure a six-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They snuck past Trinity Christian School of Griffin with a 55-49 win on Tuesday. The victory was just what Pike County needed coming off of a 56-35 loss in their prior matchup.
Pike County found their leader in underclassman Sadie Lewis, who scored 18 points along with four steals. Lewis is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Maliyah Holmes was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Peach County has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten contests, which provided a massive bump to their 11-6 record this season. As for Pike County, the win got them back to even at 8-8.
Everything came up roses for Peach County against the Pirates when the teams last played back in January as the team secured a 63-27 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Peach County since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
