3A Northern recap October 22, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in 3A Northern this week, Holy Family beat Frederick 39-28. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.
Erie took down Denver North 47-8 last week, the largest margin of any game. Christian Mickey ran for 73 yards and caught 1 pass for 26 yards in the win.
David Sommers was a passing and rushing force as Holy Family defeated the Warriors. He completed 7 passes for 95 yards and also ran for 148 yards. Sommers' favorite target this week was Matthew Erb, who caught 4 passes for 59 yards.
Willy Clements made the biggest impact on defense this week as Michael Gabriel's team topped Frederick. The 6-foot-3 junior recorded 1 fumble.
Erb was the best receiver in the league this week as the Tigers defeated Thad Lear's team. Erb racked up 4 receptions for 59 yards. Jeff Ball helped Holy Family's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 33 yards.
Holy Family's Sommers and Erb have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-3 quarterback Sommers has thrown for 1,201 yards this season, while Erb has 35 catches for 616 yards. The Tigers' Joe Ramey leads the league in rushing yards with 824.
An important game coming up in 3A Northern this week will be when Centaurus takes on the Tigers. At the moment, the Warriors are in fourth, while Holy Family is in first.
The Tigers made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,883 from 3,296. The improvement was the result of a 39-28 victory over the Warriors last week.
